Another gentleman complimented me on the phone today. I suppose some people think it would be creepy, but I'm used to chatting with complete strangers, and they say all sorts of things!
This man in particular told me that my hair looked great (which is funny because he can't see me), and he said I had a very pleasant phone voice. I gotta tell ya: a little kindness goes a long way.

Job Perks
I generally like my job. But right now, I really love my job.
Me (answering the phone): "Company Name, Jenene speaking."
Voice on the other end: "Jenene?" (said with an English accent)
Me: "Yes"?
English Guy: "What a pretty name."
Me: "Thank you."
EG: "Is so-and-so there?"
Me: "No, I'm sorry, he isn't in today, can I transfer you to his cell phone instead?"
EG: "Yes, thank you, that would be lovely."
That just made my day. :)

All In A Day's Work
I'm going to reveal a little bit more about my job. You all know that I am a receptionist, but what you didn't know that I am a receptionist at an animal health solutions company. Animal health solutions, you ask?
Well, I live on the Canadian prairies, which means lotsa farmers! And they farm everything. Our company just deals with the pig and chicken side of things. And animal health solutions means feed, genetics, supplies, vaccines, that type of thing.
So, anywho, I answer the phone for all those farmers who call in to talk to our feed guys, or our vet, or our accounting staff (all the paperwork side of things happens in our office where I work).
However, our office is in a large building that has other businesses in it. For example, a health clinic. For people. This doctor's office is in no way associated or affiliated with us.
I should mention that the name of our company does not have the word "animal" in it. And of course, some geniuses out there decided to put these 2 unrelated health companies in the same building. Can you guess where this is going?
I cannot count how many people have called or come in, asking to see the doctor, or asking me if this is the doctor's office, or asking me where the clinic is (because these same geniuses also didn't put up any clear signs), and of course, people wondering if our company sells vitamins or exercise equipment.
The head honchos (who are truly wonderful people, by the way) comment from time to time that we should probably put up a sign outside of our office somehow indicating that we are about animal health, complete with pictures of pigs and chickens. But I think they secretly get a kick out of people's confusion.
I suppose it is funny, but I tend to be quite a sympathetic person, so I always feel embarrassed for those individuals, wandering around outside my door, clearly not knowing where the heck they are supposed to go.
Another "wonderful" thing about working so close to a people health clinic is that I get to listen to the screams and cries of babies and little kids who's mommies brought them to the doctor. Joy.
And finally, some of those same geniuses I keep telling you about decided to build an elderly complex that is attached to our building. So when I'm not listening to unhappy children, I'm watching really old people take their daily walks, inside and around the building, which leads them right past my office, and as they shuffle slowly by, they stare at me, and it's quite a parade.
And every once in a while, I hear the unmistakable sound of an ambulance siren approach our building, and a crew comes in with a stretcher, rolls it right past my office to get to the elevator that will lead them to whatever old person needs help this time, and a few minutes later they will roll the stretcher by my office again, and this time there will be an old person in the stretcher, hooked up to an i.v. and oxygen, kind of like what just happened as I was typing this.
Well, at least I can't complain about my job being really boring. And this is just what happens outside my office! It's a whole other kind of fun inside the office....

8 Random Things...
My dear cousin Erin from Fully Alive...Ready to Smile tagged me to do this meme. I like being random, but I can't always do it on demand. I'll try:
1. I am so self-conscious of my hair that I won't wear a toque, even in the freezing cold of winter. I just don't want to mess it up, and especially since I'm a receptionist, I always want to make sure that my hair is making a good impression.
2. Speaking of my job as a receptionist: I am a nerd for office supplies. I get so excited when I have to order ink, or pens, or post-its. I just love flipping through the Grand & Toy catalogue, thinking, "hm, which calculator should I get, there are so many options..."
3. I consider myself a girly-girl, but I love snakes. I don't think that they are scary or slimy or gross in any way. Also, I'm not afraid of peeing in the bush, so maybe I'm not that girly-girl.
4. The very first time I ever went fishing, I caught a fish, and a fair-sized fish too. I was 7 years old. I have never caught one since. I'm a bit disappointed.
5. I had a dream once that I became a boy. I have never met another girl who has had this dream. I don't know why I had this dream, I'm not alluding to anything...except that I have strange dreams.
6. When I move to the States, there are going to be a lot of things to adjust to. Like cooking, keeping my own house, paying bills, learning to drive standard, a new job, new friends, new church, new environment (not to mention new husband). But the thing I am most concerned about? Finding a new hairdresser. A GOOD new hairdresser.
7. I'm 22 years old, and I don't own a cell phone. I don't own a car. I don't own a house, or my own computer, or even my own camera. And I'm kind of proud of all of these things. But I bit the bullet and got myself a credit card for the first time. I've had it for 2 weeks. I still haven't activated it.
8. I am organized. I like being organized. I have a day planner that I absolutely love, but I'm so organized, I don't even use it! I write in it after the fact. My day planner is in my head.
I'm not going to tag anyone, but if you feel like doing this meme, go right ahead!

How Convenient
Since Sunday was Remembrance Day here in Canada, some of us had Monday off as a holiday. I learned that this wasn't a universal long weekend, so I'll try not to rub it in. But of course, I had to catch a cold on my extra day off.
I guess it's a good thing I didn't need to miss work, but still: I have an extra day off, and I can't fully enjoy it because I'm sick! Plus, Elleah and Jared and Kiera came over yesterday, but I didn't want to get the baby sick, so I stayed away from her. :(
I know I'm not a mother or anything, but I'm so in love with my little niece, that I just ache to hold her! So it's practically torture when she's right there, but I am forced to keep my distance. However, I glean almost as much joy watching my dad hold his grand-daughter. I love seeing this side of him. :D It's a precious sight.
